This piece was influenced by the ancient rune stones found across northern Europe. The cryptic symbols in these rune stones are fascinating. I like the idea that someone was able to communicate with us across thousands of years by carving these symbols in stone. When we look at them we ask, “What does it say, what does it mean?” I can only imagine the excitement and wonder of unearthing one of these stones.
I hope to stir up similar emotions with this piece. I hope to awaken one’s curiosity enough that they will take time to decipher the symbols carved into the wood and stone. In doing so, one will feel either that certain satisfaction that comes from solving a riddle or the frustration of being unable to do so. But, hopefully, they will at least feel something. Unlike the rune stones of old, I have provided a key with which one can decipher the message.
It will be fun to watch this piece age. With time and the elements, the wood grain will begin to show more texture. Both the wood and the copper will slowly change in color. If located in a cool, shady area, moss may begin to grow on the stone. Wherever it is located, it will come to belong in its environment as the years go by.
