Those who are familiar with puzzles will soon see the obvious: The headpiece provides the key to a simple substitution alphabet that can be used to translate the symbols on the stone below. Only after deciphering the code, can one fully appreciate the sculpture.
I imagine someone coming across this sculpture with a table and chair nearby. Noticing paper and pencil atop the table, one might sit for a few minutes and decipher the message. Thus, one becomes not only a viewer of the piece, but actively involved with it.
Standing over 7 feet tall and made of hand carved and richly textured redwood, copper, steel and concrete, this piece is designed to last for years. Redwood is legendary in its ability to withstand the elements. It is treated with a quality oil based stain. The sculpture is expected to age beautifully as the wood, stone and copper weather with the elements, enhancing its already ancient feel.
Like the Suiseki seen elsewhere on this website, there is no wood/ground contact. Two steel sleeves are set in the ground with concrete. A steel post is set into each sleeve and the wood framework is attached to this steel. This method keeps the wood off the ground, ensuring its long life. It also makes it easy to move to a new location: the steel posts are simply removed from their sleeves.
